This week I have been taking part in the Alps De Las Castillas at Golf de Valdeluz, Guadalajara, Spain. The course was short and very scoreable as the results show. Coming into the event I was back to full fitness and feeling great about my game and the week ahead. We played a practice round on the Tuesday to get a feel for the course and then did some practice on Wednesday to ensure that everything was sharp for the first day on Thursday.
Day One:
I played relatively steady on the first day but felt like I didn’t really take advantage of anything on the front nine after a fast start. It is a course that you have to make a lot of birdies on and I didn’t really do this on the front nine. The back nine I played a little better and managed to pick up a few shots to get back into the tournament. I managed to shoot 67 (-5) on the first round which put me right on the cut line and around 30th on the leaderboard. These scores reflect how many chances there are out there. It was a solid foundation to build on and I felt like I could go really low and get myself back into the tournament.
Day Two:
Today I started off really well, having birdied the first two I was then able to birdie my fourth and then eagle my fifth hole on the day making me -5 through five holes which was the perfect start and what I needed to do. I made a couple of bad swings and dropped a shot before picking it back up on my 9th hole. This allowed me to reach the turn at -5 for the round and -10 for the tournament. On my second nine I played really solid and gave myself a chance of making birdie on pretty much every hole. Unfortunately I couldn’t get the ball to drop on this nine which left me really frustrated. I finished the day with a 65 (-7) but felt like I had left a lot of shots out there and could have really got myself in contention instead of being seven shots behind. Again another solid round but one that I didn’t get what I deserved out of. I finished the first two days in a tie for 21st at -12. The cut fell at a crazy -10!!!
Day Three:
Going into the last round I felt great and felt like a really low number was in the locker. I got off to the perfect start with a two putt birdie on the first before hitting it close on the next but missing. Today’s round was very flat and I just couldn’t get the ball in the hole. I was fairly unlucky and felt like I didn’t get my just rewards out of the round. I managed to shoot 69 (-3) which round this golf course is no where good enough. My position slipped into a tie for 33rd which I am disappointing about as I know I have left a lot of shots out there especially today. I just wasn’t good enough today that’s just plain and simple! -15 for 3 days is usually pretty handy but unfortunately this week it just wasn’t good enough to be competitive.
Plenty of positives to take from the week and going forward. Looking forward to a chilled afternoon before flying to Vienna tomorrow morning to play my next event in Graz, Austria. Plenty of work to be done before that tournament gets under way next Thursday! Lets hope that we can take some momentum into these next couple of weeks and really get everything out of a round that I possibly can. My game is trending in the right direction and I know that I am not too far off my best and converting these good rounds into some great results. Once again thanks for all the support I am receiving it means a lot to me.
Many Thanks
Jack
